2026 Lenten Gospel

Thursday of the Third Week of Lent

Luke 11: 14-23

14Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. 15But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.” 16Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.

17Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.18If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul.19Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.20But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

21 “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe.22But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.

23 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

The Finger of God: When the Kingdom Arrives and We Explain It Away

A mute man speaks. Some accuse Jesus of evil.People accept, resist, or explain away God’s work.

The Man Who Spoke

The mute man is freed. His freedom shows God’s kingdom has come. The crowd’s reactions reveal their hearts.

The Accusation

Some say Jesus uses Satan’s power.Others want more proof, ignoring the miracle. Both avoid accepting God’s work.

The Logic That Dismantles the Accusation

Jesus says Satan wouldn’t fight himself. If Jesus served evil, He’d help it, not fight it.Jesus notes their logic is inconsistent.

The Finger of God

If Jesus works by God’s power, God’s kingdom is here.‘Finger of God’ means God acts directly.Jesus shows God acting now.God’s kingdom is seen in healing.

The Strong Man and the Stronger One

Jesus says a stronger one overpowers the strong man.Satan is strong, but Jesus is stronger and frees people.Jesus frees people from Satan.Jesus rescues people from evil.

No Neutral Ground

Jesus says you’re with Him or against Him.You must respond to God’s kingdom.

What We Do With What We See

Everyone must choose how to respond.Doubting or staying passive resists Jesus.Like the mute man, we can receive freedom. The passage urges us to accept God’s work and find freedom.

A Question to Sit With:

Is there an area of your life where you have been explaining away or deferring the activity of God — finding reasons not to receive what He is offering or not to respond to what He is clearly doing? What would it look like to stop scattering and begin gathering — to align yourself fully with the one who is stronger than everything that has held you bound?
