2026 Lenten Gospel

Solemnity of St. Joseph

Matthew 1:16, 18-21

16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.

18This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

A Man Who Said Yes in the Dark: The Faith of Joseph

Matthew’s telling of Jesus’ birth centers on Joseph, an ordinary man whose quiet faith leads him to accept an impossible task.

The Man in the Genealogy

Matthew’s genealogy ends with Joseph, not as Jesus’ father, but as Mary’s husband. This shift highlights the uniqueness of Jesus’ story.

An Impossible Situation

Mary and Joseph were engaged but not living together when Mary was found pregnant. Matthew says the Holy Spirit caused the pregnancy, but Joseph only knew his fiancée was pregnant and assumed she was unfaithful. He faced difficult choices.

The Righteousness of Restraint

Joseph, described as righteous, could have exposed Mary to public shame but chose a quiet divorce to spare her. He showed mercy before any angel appeared, which is why God chose him.

The Dream That Changed Everything

As Joseph struggled with what to do, an angel appeared to him in a dream. The angel told him not to be afraid—Mary’s pregnancy was from the Holy Spirit. She would have a son named Jesus, who would save his people. Joseph realized what he thought was betrayal was actually God’s plan, and he was chosen to be Jesus’ earthly father.

The Weight of the Yes

Matthew doesn’t record Joseph’s feelings; he simply obeys the angel and takes Mary home as his wife. This decision came with social risk and misunderstanding, but Joseph moved forward in faith, trusting God’s word.

A Quiet Greatness

Joseph never speaks in Matthew’s Gospel. He simply acts—obeying, protecting, and providing. His quiet obedience made room for Jesus’ birth and gave him a place in Israel’s story. Joseph’s greatness is humble and unseen, valued most by God.

What Joseph’s Faith Speaks to Us

Joseph’s story encourages anyone asked by God to do something difficult or confusing. Faith often means saying a quiet yes to God, even when it’s hard to explain or understand. Joseph obeyed in the dark, and his faith made him part of God’s story.

A Question to Sit With:

Is there something God has been asking of you that requires a yes in the dark — a step of obedience that cannot be fully explained or validated by others, that will cost you something, that rests on nothing more visible than a word He has spoken to your heart? What is keeping you from taking that step?
